OMCRA - The Sydenham River Canoe Race

Sydenham River Canoe Race

Sunday, April 23, 2006

The Sydenham River Canoe Race is one of the first races of our season. There is always a large group of paddlers taking advantage of the early spring high water levels on this beautiful, twisting river. There is a great a race for every type of boat and it covers distances ranging from 10 km to 22 km.

The recreational class is all down stream but for those looking for a challenge, the higher-level classes start with an upstream jaunt. There is no real shallow water and there are several sections of rapids which make it fun but not dangerous. There are lots of support crews on shore and on the water.
This is a fund raising event for the St. Clair Conservation Authority and paddlers can collect sponsors or simply pay the registration fee. There are many boats in each class with great trophies which are especially appreciated by all the young people participating.

START AND REGISTRATION: Follow signs to put in on the Mosside Line, 3 km west of Hwy #79. Registration from 10:00 – 11:00 am and race starts at 11:20 am. If you get there early there are vans to shuttle vehicles to the finish line.

COURSE DESCRIPTION: Deep river with several sections of class 1 rapids. No portages.
