OMCRA - Speed River Challenge

Speed River Challenge

Saturday, May 12, 2007

This year the Speed River Challenge moves back to an early season date where we should have higher water. The classes for local and novice recreational paddlers will be 5 km. The C2 race is 15 km and the C1 race will be 5 km. It is a very technical paddle across a mill pond and up a twisting river. Depending on water levels there may be two or three loops which means lots of buoy turns and the fun of meeting the other paddlers over and over again on the course. This also makes it a great event for spectators as they get to see the race progress. Start and finish at the same location is very convenient.

All tandem classes race the same course, which increases the technical skills required. There are prizes given out on a raffle basis at the end for all those who are present. It’s a good chance to race two events in one day since the C2 and C1 races are run consecutively not simultaneously.

START and REGISTRATION: Parking lot on Spring Street, behind St. Andrews Presbyterian Church. For new racers, The Speed River Challenge is held in Hespeler, NORTH of Highway 401. Registration starts at 9 am and the race begins at 10:30 am.

FEE: C2 - $15, C1 - $9 ($15 to participate in both events, non OMCRA members add $3 for insurance) To get to the registration and race start, take the Hespeler Road (Highway 24) exit from 401 and proceed north. At the first traffic light, turn right onto Queen Street. Drive through three traffic lights. After Guelph Avenue proceed through a small business district and take the next exit which is Chapel Street. This turns into Spring Street in a very short distance.
