OMCRA - North Bay to Mattawa

North Bay to Mattawa Race

Saturday, July 28, 2007

This race is the jewel of the OMCRA racing schedule. Held in mid summer it has everything going for it. This year especially as it will occur the day after the finale of the 2006 Canadian Nationals in Mattawa. It is a true marathon. It starts on a big lake and travels down through many twisting rivers and chains of smaller lakes. There are multiple portages or lots of white water, it’s your choice based on your skill level. There are at least 3 mandatory portages around dams and water falls. The rapids can be up to class three depending on the water levels but there is always the option to portage around. The portages cover quite rough terrain with changes in elevation and lots of boulders, you must be able to carry everything in your boat. It is a long race (64 km) but well worth the trip.
This is the traditional voyageur route across the Canadian Shield. As they made the trip from Winnipeg to Montreal with their loads of furs this is where they switched from up stream to down stream paddling. The spectacular scenery makes this a popular event for paddlers of all abilities. From pro boats rushing to set a new record to relaxed excursionists who pack a picnic lunch, all will enjoy this trip. Because of the voyageur history this is the only race in Ontario still competed in North Canoes. These big boats of 8 paddlers ply the waters in honour of our paddling ancestors. The event features a family class; which only covers the last third of the course, and allows the youngsters to get a feel for this beautiful river. There is a great potluck supper after the paddle with the best prize table in the province featuring the work of local craftspeople.
