OMCRA - Canoe the Nonquon

37th Annual Canoe the Nonquon

Saturday, June 2, 2007

This race is always held on the first Saturday in June and the course for this race has something for everyone. It is a 16 mile trip which starts on an 11 mile river which winds through lush green marsh and ends with a five mile sprint along the shoreline of Lake Scugog to Port Perry. This race is never the same twice. The water levels in the marsh depend on spring rainfall, when water levels are high you can cut corners through the long grass. During low water levels this twisty sections has lots of 180 degree turns. The lake can be flat as a pancake or on windy days have large waves.

The race is unique because there is no start time. Canoes can start any time after 7 am and you will be racing the clock. It is always a surprise at the end to find out how you compared to other boats in your class. This is well-attended race with large recreational as well as pro classes. This is a well supervised and safe water allows both young people and adults to participate.

Shuttle van available to take participants back to their cars.
